As a result, the project was canceled, and Widescreen Games was no more. Yet, sadly, the development was halted due to a disagreement between CD Projekt Red and Widescreen Games. The Witcher remake would have been released as " The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf" and was originally scheduled to launch back in April 2009. And of course, a developer with such a depressing record wouldn't be capable of handling a remake of The Witcher, right? Kind of. Most of Widescreen Games' developed titles were generic and received horrible reviews. The remake would have been handled by the now-bankrupt French developer Widescreen Games SARL. In fact, CD Projekt Red wanted the console version to be built from the ground up, basically a remake. However, months after the release of the enhanced edition, CD Projekt Red had plans to port the game to the PS3 and Xbox 360. Unfortunately, despite the recognition and popularity the first Witcher game garnered, the console market was missing out on the fun. The edition came packed with several enhancements such as additional NPC models, improved dialogue, a redesigned inventory system, and many more.

The title has also gone to receive several awards and was even nominated as 2007's Roleplaying Game of the Year however, it eventually lost the seat to EA's Mass Effect.Ī year after the release of the original, The Witcher would receive an enhanced edition on PC.

Well, now is the perfect time to go back and follow Geralt’s journey from the start. After the release of the original Witcher game on PC, it was met with positive reviews and praise from both critics and gamers. A lot of fans of the series started late, with many having only played The Witcher 3. The Witcher is the first title in the The Witcher trilogy with The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt releasing in 20 respectively. While a console version under the name The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf was planned for release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, it was unfortunately cancelled and never saw the light of day.

The Witcher originally released in 2007 as a PC exclusive.

While The Witcher might feel a bit dated compared to the much more recent, The Witcher 3, it is a great game nonetheless and without it, The Witcher 3 couldn’t have ever existed. As fans eagerly await the release of CD Projekt Red’s latest title, Cyberpunk 2077, now is a better time than ever to go back and experience the start of the series that put the developer on the map, The Witcher as it is now free to play on GOG.
